There are so many stories going around about weight loss.
Where have these myths come from?
A lot these of myths start because people do not really understand how to lose weight.
Some of the myths start as an excuse as to why people cannot lose weight. They say things like doing exercise makes you heavier and use that as an excuse not to do exercise. Fundamentally this is true, but they have not looked deeply enough into this subject. When you exercise you put on muscle. Muscle is twice as heavy as fat. You therefore should not rely on how much you weigh but have a look in the mirror and see what you look like.
Many people say that salt is not fattening because it has very little calories. Although this is true it causes you to retain water which means that you will put on weight. Salt also causes an increase in blood pressure which can lead to heart disease and other problems. There is so much salt in food these days that there is not need to add additional salt to your meals.
Another myth is that exercise ruins your joints. Exercise if done properly will not damage your joints. The only way that exercise can damage your joints is if you do it incorrectly.
Another great myth is that sugar is not addictive. Sugar is actually more addictive than heroin. It affects the perception in your brain. If you feed you children lots of sugary food and then suddenly stop them having it they will have a bad reaction. They will become irritable, temperamental and generally make your life hell. It can cause them to become hyperactive. Think of the times that you have given them sweets or fizzy drinks. It is the sugar that makes them become hyperactive.
Another myth about weight loss is that skipping meals will make you lose weight. Doing this will actually make your body store more fat. This goes back to early evolution. When you do not get the energy from foods you body goes into starvation mode and store fat to enable you to carry on functioning. The stored fat gave them energy to out and hunt for more food and therefore survive. It is this natural instinct for survival that make them store fat. That is because it is a good source of energy. Although skipping meals will reduce the amount of calories you consume, it will not stop you from storing fat.
A lot of these myths come about because people do not understand how the body works.
