One of the first things trainers say when someone expresses a desire to lose weight is that exercise is a key factor. Without it one simply cannot maintain a healthy lifestyle or sustain their weight loss for a long period. However, too much of anything can turn something beneficial into something harmful. There are certain instances where people tend to push themselves too far and demand too much from their bodies to the point that they tend to damage and hurt themselves in the long run. So when does exercise become detrimental? Here are a few situations where losing weight through exercise may not be as useful as one might believe.
Compulsive Exercisers:
This is when people make exercise their sole purpose in life. They are constantly looking for ways to tone their bodies and get fit. Such people may exercise to the point of exhaustion, suffer from depression if unable to exercise, and tend to be obsessed with their bodies. They may even continue to exercise if injured and invite greater threat on to themselves.
Bulimic exercisers:
Bulimic exercisers have the same characteristics as compulsive exercisers but have one additional feature-they tend to be binge eaters. These individuals, after binging on snacks or other unhealthy foods, become obsessed with burning off the calories gained. They constantly keep counting calories and use hardcore exercise regimes to justify their bad eating habits as well as punish themselves.
Health Problems:
Not only does the body need exercise to stay fit, but it also needs adequate rest. Some of the side effects of too much exercise include: reproductive problems, fatigue, osteoporosis, dehydration, arthritis, kidney failure, stress problems, problems with the heart, lack of menstruation in women due to severe reduction of body fat, and suppression of the immune system.
So how much is too much?
It is said that to stay fit, one should exercise thirty to forty minutes a day, five days a week, but can this be a realistic target. Athletes can work out for hours without facing any problems. It all depends on one's fitness level and the type of lifestyle he leads. Usually when someone starts exhibiting symptoms of a compulsive or bulimic exerciser, he/she becomes depressed about his weight and becomes obsessed with exercising as a means to stay happy rather than healthy. Hence, individuals should refrain from such a compulsive attitude towards weight loss and foremost priority should be given to health.
